Marked With an "X"
I read a great story by Brian Jones this week. I'm quoting his blog here, and including this link so you can go read the whole thing:
My grandmother was born in 1923 and grew up during the Great Depression. She told me that during that difficult time, people wandered door to door with their children, asking for food scraps. People quickly found out that my grandmother’s parents were generous people. Anyone who came to the door received food if there was any to give. After a while so many people were coming to their house that they wondered how news of their generosity had spread. One day my great-grandfather inquired, and he was told, “Because of the X.” On the side of the house, someone had scratched a large X that signaled to people walking by that this house was a place you could get your needs met.
Has someone scratched a large "X" on you that signals to people walking by that you are available to meet needs for them? That thought really resonated with me. Sometimes we're so busy trying to get people to "see" us and "hear" our needs, that we forget: once we've decided to follow Christ, our role changes! We should WANT to have a big "X" on us telling all the people in our community that we're here for them!
The hard part is, we hear this and start thinking about ourselves. We get frustrated by those disciples who can only think about what they think they need or what they want, and we forget that it is a blessing to be the hands and feet of Christ!
Be overwhelmed and humbled this week at the opportunities God puts in front of you to be marked with an "X" stating - "Here Am I, Send Me!!!"
