Nothing Is Sound
My son, Ethan, made his decision to follow Christ last weekend and was baptized on Sunday. We spent most of the week prior talking about his questions about Christ and about faith. He asked me more questions than I've ever been asked before about the subject, and I frequently found myself digging in my concordances and even commentaries to best answer such important questions.
During one of our discussions, we were listening to the Switchfoot song, "Happy Is A Yuppie Word," (another interesting blog in and of itself:) a song about the fleeting nature of happiness and the authenticity of pure joy that even an unbeliever could understand. At the end of the song, the band repeats the line, "Nothing Is Sound," several times. Ethan asked what that phrase meant, so I proceeded to explain that the word "sound" means "stable" or "unshakable." I further explained to him that God is the author of this universe, therefore, nothing we know could ever be "sound" because everything is temporary.
Ethan replied, "yeah, cause, like, God could just BREATHE... and we'd ALL be gone!"
Well, yes, Ethan, God could just breathe, and we'd all be gone. We forget that, though, all too often. We are way too important to ourselves and often need to be reminded of why we're here: to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with a lost and dying world. I have suggested to my readers before that you get a copy of Paul Baloche's "Glorious" album and listen to the song, titled, "Shaken." It may just shake you up, but if not, here's the source of its truth:
Hebrews 12:25-27
25 Be careful that you do not refuse to listen to the One who is speaking. For if the people of Israel did not escape when they refused to listen to Moses, the earthly messenger, we will certainly not escape if we reject the One who speaks to us from heaven! 26 When God spoke from Mount Sinai his voice shook the earth, but now he makes another promise: “Once again I will shake not only the earth but the heavens also.”[k] 27 This means that all of creation will be shaken and removed, so that only unshakable things will remain.
Jeff this is so awesome! Congratulations about Ethan :) I miss you and Jennifer and the kids. Is there any chance at all you'd be coming to visit?
